Historical win for Canarias Basketball Academy in the U18 Spanish Championships!
Joventut could not resist CBA’s impulse and strength and lost to the Grancanarian team 82-84 in the last game of the first round. This meant CBA’s first place in Group G and the Academy is going to face the second in Group H, L’Hospitalet, this Wednesday 6th of May at 5 pm (local time) at Pabellón José Antonio Paraíso in Torrejón de Ardoz. A victory on Wednesday would be epic for CBA as it has never qualified for the quarter finals in any Spanish competition.
CBA started the encounter with Jon Peña, Álvaro Reyes, Jordan Blount, Souleymane Diakite and Menno Dijkstra and found the rim easily (9-18, minute 6). In the end of the first quarter, Canarias Basketball Academy maintained the lead (20-28) with 8 points by center Menno Dijkstra.
In the second period Joventut had a comeback but the white team could reply and reached the halftime winning (39-41) with Jon Peña accumulating 10 points and 5 rebounds for 17 ranking points.
The second half was a copy of the first one as CBA had a margin from 2 to 10 points because of Joventut’s quality from the perimeter (61-68, minute 30). Menno Dijkstra, Álvaro Reyes, Jon Peña and Jordan Connors’ actions in offense and a great rebounding work (14 more than Joventut, 50 in total) made CBA have the control of the game in the last two minutes with two points up.
At the free throw line, CBA assured a very important victory (82-84) which helped the Academy finish in the first place of Group G, what means that L’Hospitalet is awaiting in the eighth finals. A win qualifies and a loss sends the team back home.
