Senior Dutch center Thomas van der Mars was officially named to the Capital One Academic All-America First Team this Thrusday. This is van der Mars second academic award during his collegiate career as he was also named to the Academic All-America third team in 2014. He becomes the first Pilot men’s basketball player to earn first team honors and just one of 9 players to pick up multiple awards in the history of the WCC. The four year starter has also been named to the 10-player Division I-AAA Athletic Directors Association Scholar-Athlete Team and an all-WCC Honorable Mention.
This season Thomas averages 10.5 points and 8.0 rebounds a game as well as recording 5 double doubles (the last one, 17-10, vs Saint Mary’s on the 19th of February). He also has blocked109 shots this season which is a new school record which was previously set at104 and with 2 conference games still to play, thursday vs BYU and the 28th vs former CBA graduates Duda Sanadze and Jito Kok’s University of San Deigo, he really has the possibility add to his own record. Two more victories will take the Pilots to .500 in conference play as they currently stand 7-9, 16-12 overall and 5th in the WCC.
Finally, his teammate and former CBA graduate Volodymir Gerun has also stood out in this season averaging 8.7 points and 6.3 rebounds per game.
