Dutch senior center Thomas van der Mars contributed for the Pilots with 16 points, 13 rebounds and 3 blocks in 31 minutes as his team lost to Saint Mary’s last Saturday 24th (74-64).
This performance meant his third double double of the season (the first one was vs Murray State on the 28th of November with 10 points and 13 rebounds and the second, vs Portland State on the 3rd of December with 19 points and 14 rebounds) and increased his average stats: 10.9 points and 8.0 rebounds in 25.0 minutes.
Furthermore last Thrusday 22nd he helped his team win with 17 points, 8 rebounds and 2 blocks in 25 minutes as the Pilots defeated Pacific (72-69). #3 Gonzaga is going to be the Pilots’ next rival this Thrusday 29th on the road.
Additionally, Thomas van der Mars was named Senior Class Award Candidate last week. “University of Portland basketball senior Thomas van der Mars has been named one of 30 national candidates for the 2014-15 Senior CLASS Award® which recognizes student-athletes who excel both on and off the court. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition. [...] Van der Mars is the first Portland basketball player to be named a candidate for the award which was established for men’s and women’s basketball players in 2002 and then expanded to other sports in 2007″, the Pilots press release says.
