The ninth victory for Canarias Basketball Academy’s first team happened this Sunday in Ciudad Condal as it beat Aleix Durán’s Barça in the overtime 80 a 85.

At Ciudad Deportiva Joan Gamper Ludvig Hakanson, Stefan Peno, Papa Mbaye, Alejandro Mazaira and Roger Guardia were the local starters and the Grancanarian team chose Berni Hernández,  Roberto Guerra, Kaleb Wright, Jacobo Díaz and Kostya Kulikov.

The game began with a host’s basket by Mazaira assisted by Papa Mbaye. Right after CBA Gran Canaria replied with two points by Kulikov who made Wright’s pass.

Barça got a little advantage in the next three minutes (9-3) and the Canarian reaction came with a 0-8 run that equalled the game (12-11, minute 6).

Pepe Carrión’s players achieved a 6 point margin in the end of the first quarter (19-25) and Jacobo Díaz (10 points) and Diego Quintana (6) were the most outstanding players.

In the second period CBA led the score and kept the distance to reach halftime 8 points ahead (34-42, with  Kulikov and Díaz adding 14 and 13 ranking points, respectively).

After the break, Barça decreased the disadvantage but CBA Gran Canaria maintained the lead (58-61, minute 30).

Two three-pointers by Moix and Sulejmanovic made Barça have a comeback (67-65) and then the most experienced CBA players Berni Hernández and Roberto Guerra rescued the visiting team scored threes and tied the encounter with one minute and two seconds left.

The game needed an overtime to decide the winner and the turning point was the providential shot from downtown that Kostya Kulikov scored with two minutes left. That feat was followed by Kaleb Wright who sealed the 76-81 in minute 44.

Roberto Guerra and Jacobo Díaz scored the rest of the visiting points for a definite 80 – 85 vs a relegation contender in Liga Adecco Plata.

CBA Gran Canaria’s coach, Pepe Carrión, described the win as “a victory in which each one did what was expected”, and added that “this is the way to make the team grow”.

In that sense, up to five Academy’s players exceeded 10 ranking points: Kulikov (22), Díaz (19), Wright (18), Guerra (13) and Voorn (11).

Moreover, the Sevillian coach explained that “the game has been tight as both team were very close in the standings. We could solve their physical advantage and the problems on rebounding  as they grabbed 15 offensive ones whereas we got 4; but I think we knew the game and managed the most important plays well. In addition, everybody added things to us”.

Finally, the next CBA Gran Canaria game is going to be next Saturday 28th at 6 pm vs Opentach Basquet Pla at Centro Insular de Deportes with free entrance.
