U16 Canarias Basketball Academy team arrived in Gran Canaria this morning after taking part in the Spanish Championships that are being held in Andorra and La Seu d’Urgell (Lérida).

 CBA cadete

The excellent performance by Samuel Sosa’s players have helped CBA get a fantastic 9th place, the best ever (as it happened with the U18 team with the 7th place), improving last year’s 14th position.

Therefore, the great job during the year could be seen in the first round where it finished second in Group F as it clearly beat the first two contenders (41-84 vs CBC D’Elhuyar and 96-42 vs EM Santander) and it almost surprised Joventut de Badalona (64-51).

In the 1/8, the Academy  had ups and downs against Unicaja  Málaga. Though they were losing in the beginning, at halftime they tied the game (33-33) and gained a 10 point advantage in the end of the first quarter (52-42). Finally, they were defeated 64-70 after the  oppenent’s powerful comeback (12-28).

“I am glad because of the players and coaching staff’s job”, U16 Canarias Basketball Academy Coach Samuel  Samuel Sosa said and added: “We have competed vs first level teams and CBA was at the height of the circumstances”. “I am very satisfied for the ninth place because we have improved last season’s, and that is why we must not stop and we will keep on working to get better in the following course”, Sosa assured.

Finally, the semifinals of this competition are going to  be played this afternoon in which CBA’s contenders Joventut and Unicaja are going to challenge Real Madrid and FC Barcelona, respectively, at 5 and 7 pm. The winners will meet in the Finals and the losers, in the game for the third place.
