It was an historical championship for Canarias Basketball Academy in Torrejón de Ardoz above all since last Wednesday as it reached the quarterfinals for the first time ever and it finished with terrific news: win over Gran Canaria (75-67) and seventh place!
CBA had already beaten Gran Canaria three times in the Canarian league (the last time on the 19th of April in the Canarian Finals in Tenerife) and in the last game of the season the Academy wanted to continue its positive streak.
That is why it began so focused (17-7, minute 7) with a great team effort. Nevertheless, as in the other three previous encounters, Gran Canaria struggled to damage CBA by using a zone and making three pointers (22-24, minute 15). At halftime Souleymane Diakite was the best CBA player with 8 points and 7 rebounds as his team lost 30-31 to the Grancanarian team.
After the break, Canarias Basketball Academy got another big advantage (49-42, minute 26), but Gran Canaria could have the second comeback of the game in minute 30 (55-56). However, in the last quarter the good work against the zone, the hardness in defense and two crucial three pointers in the last minute by Álvaro Reyes (from 67-67 to 73-67) made CBA win its fourth match-up against Gran Canaria this season (75-67).
Souleymane Diakite was the top scorer of the game with 22 points and he also added 13 rebounds (the same as Menno Dijkstra) and 33 ranking points, whereas his Dutch teammate got 12 points and 21 ranking points. Furthermore, there were also three players with more than ten points (pointguard Jon Peña and forward Jordan Blount with 10 and guard Álvaro Reyes with 13).
These were the scores in each of the six games CBA played in the U18 Spanish Championships in Torrejón de Ardoz.
